Geographical differences have given distinctive character to each of the coasts. The Andaman Coast is the most dramatic, edged by sheer limestone cliffs carved by wind and water into strange silhouettes, and interleaved with thick bands of mangrove forest. The Gulf Coast begins and ends quietly with relatively flat, featureless stretches to the south of Bangkok and down towards the Malaysian border, but peaks at its midpoint, where the peninsular mountains march into the sea to form the wildly varied landscapes of the Samui archipelago and the Ang Thong National Marine Park. A fair chunk of the East Coast is dominated by the rigs of offshore oil and gas exploration, but the islands that lie further out have forested spines and gorgeous strands. In short, you’ll find great beaches on all three coasts: idyllic confections of clear turquoise waters at invitingly balmy temperatures, sand so soft that it squeaks underfoot, and palm trees laden with coconuts.

The Thai royal family started the craze for seaside holidays by making regular trips to Hua Hin in the early 1900s, and the subsequent construction of the Southern Railway Line soon opened up the region to the rest of the population. Inspired by American GIs who’d discovered Thailand’s attractions during their R&R breaks from Vietnam, it wasn’t long before foreign holidaymakers followed suit, and these days tourism is the main industry in nearly all Thailand’s coastal areas. Many of the most beautiful spots have been well and truly discovered, and a number have developed into full-blown high-rise resorts which seem to have more in common with the Costa del Sol than the rest of Southeast Asia. But you need only venture a few kilometres from such anomalies to encounter a more traditional scene of fishing communities, rubber plantations and Buddhist temples. Over ninety percent of Thais are Theravada Buddhists, and their faith colours all aspects of daily life, from the tiered temple rooftops that dominate the skyline, to the omnipresent saffron-robed monks and the packed calendar of festivals.

Despite all SE Asia - tsunami affected guides - say: "you can update online" you don't get lot of information on their website.
Practically half of the areas detailed by this book is affected by the tsunami. The information is good, but not certain due to all the problems in the area. I've been in the andaman beaches and the guide was usefull, but I would wait for next version of this book. Lonely Planet Thailand (the next version, tsunami updated) is ready in august 2005, I think. So it's worth waiting...

Although I didn't make it to half the places in this book, I certainly enjoyed reading about them, and more importantly, thoroughly enjoyed the places I did make it to.

Remember: this is the guide to use if you're only going to LOS (the Land of Smiles) to island hop. Use the general Thailand book if you want to see the mainland as well as the beaches (it will detail quite a few of the islands and beaches as well.)

Footprint Thailand, 5th Edition (Footprint Thailand Handbook) Review

I took this book with me on my trip to Thailand and I was glad I did. Its tone is much less that of the wannabe-hipster and more of the seasoned realist. To me, that was very fitting for this country in particular.

Much of the subjective criticism within the book was accurate and helpful, such as the honest appraisal of Chiang Mai's night bazaar. Even better were the excellent essays on a the dizzying array of Thai history and culture. They perfectly enhanced what I witnessed firsthand and were not overbearing; I never felt as though I was being spoonfed conclusions.

My only issue is with some of the things that were left out or glossed over. Two cases in point: A person should be aware that cons and criminal activity go on ALL OVER Bangkok. I caught a kid trying to pickpocket me on the Skytrain and it was not a pretty scene. That is a very serious crime and could have really ruined my trip -- so I think in any guide to Thailand this issue needs to be made crystal clear and more attention needs to be given to precautionary measures a traveller can take. Also, although this guide just tells you to casually "bargain" with vendors, one should be aware that the process is not always a smooth one no matter how polite or respectful you are. Most Thais that I encountered were surly when I started bargaining with them and acted quite rude. This is ofcourse all part of the give and take but it is not particularly a fun-filled experience as so many guidebooks would have you believe. You have to be really aggressive and yet finesse the deal, which most Americans are not comfortable doing in their own language much less Thai.

This book is so good you do not use it merely as reference, you read it like a book. The information is detailed. Excellent discussion of Hilltribes and issues regarding ecotourism. The authors seem to understand that not all travellers are looking for the same thing so there are many qualifiers. "If you are looking for blank this will suit you" type of thing. It is a heavy book. Maps are great. This edition is old but the most recent would be all you need to enjoy Thailand.

I bought the Frommers book mostly to meet the spending limit required to get free shipping for my online order .. and because it's smaller than the LP and bigger than Fodors (not bad), which I already have .. and I was curious. I've been to Thailand several times and speak decent Thai. This guide book is like your parents' or your grandparents' guidebook, though it tries in little ways to be different. It's characterization of travel in Thailand, and assumptions about your attitudes, says to me "you don't really want to see the real Thailand". They feel you'll be happiest at the newest, more expensive, cleanest, most Western hotels and restaurants and that you'll be more interested in the best-run, well-lit, safe and sanitary and `gee those curious Thai' types of attractions. They encourage you to be wary and worried (not always a bad idea, but hey, Thailand is a very safe place compared to the Americas!) and concerned about your hygiene (Thais, on average, are more concerned about hygiene than Westerners).

Some advice is good, and info. on the sex trade is straightforward enough, which is appreciated because you can make up your own mind. On other subjects I feel they're mostly wrong, for example the quality of faux designer goods. They make 'cute' jokes about fake Rolex watches and designer fashion goods lasting a week, but actually the quality can be very good. Having bought many such items as fun gifts over the last 10 years, I can report that all the fake Rolexes I've purchased still keep accurate time! In other areas I think they also give poor advice, for example, online booking of hotels using Thai websites. These are actually where you get the best deals, not available at the hotels no matter what your bargaining skills. They advise using `trusted' US sites like Travelocity, Expedia, & Hotwire. Sure, but only if you're looking to spend money on expensive international-style hotels in big cities. It seems they prey on our fears out of their own fear of lawsuits .. not sure.

Overall, there is some very good advice thrown in with questionable suggestions, but what kills me most is the attitude of the book - they can't really give it straight to you because they've got you pegged as a first-time traveler from the Midwest and they're 'looking out for you'.

- Bali, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos.. Get the highlights of frommers books in one edition. As all Frommers, great recommendations on itineraries (Best of lists) and opinionated. Not for backpackers who want to know more details (lonely planet is best for that) but great for those who want a range of options and strong guidance.

Not very useful for Malaysia - Graham Stratford - Kingston, Ontario Canada
I find it odd that this book had only 80 pages on Malaysia, compared to about 140 for Vietnam. Furthermore, what information it contains on Malaysia was sparse. Most of the accommodation mentioned was high-end. There wasn't even a map of Kuala Lumpur in it!

(I confess that I only spent a couple of ours with this book. After skimming through it, I took it back, and exchanged it for another that concentrates on Singapore and Malaysia. There is a Frommer's, but it was out of stock, so I picked up the Rough Guide, which is delightful so far.)

I used this book while traveling in Southern Thailand this past summer. The book is great! Having a section on BKK is also very helpful as almost anyone coming/going to Southern Thailand passes through.

The book is small and much more convenient than the larger country wide or SE Asia guide books. Assuming you are just going to Southern Thailand.. this is all you need. The format is clear and very well formatted. The prices were a tad off, but this seems to be the norm with guidebooks.

Have been using this book while planning an upcoming trip to Thailand. I have used Lonely Planet books in the past but I think I will be switching to Rough Guide from now on. This book contains lots of helpful info on all areas of Thailand's beaches and islands as well as a thorough section on Bangkok. Unlike Lonely Planet, Rough Guide does not assume that only backpackers will be using their guidebooks and therefore makes an effort to review all levels of accomodation and restaurants.

Just returned from Thailand this week. We used this book (although the cover photo is different, so perhaps we had the previous edition). Some of the bungalow info was different (i.e. unrecognizeable from the book description), but they change so fast that's to be forgiven in any guidebook. What really irked me was the crazy light orange text colour for headings and numbers - trying to read in dim Asian lighting or the back of taxi was extremely difficult. Also, I found the maps oddly placed. Good size, though, and the transportation info was accurate.

At first glance, a mountain resort is not really the best place for ghosts. But considering that most of the winter ski resorts are built in places where some success stories terrible and frightening - then the existence of an evil soul is entirely imaginary. In New England, for example, there are many ghost stories and the stories and visions are the spirits of these have left their mark in the forests and villages near the tourist area.

El MonteWashington Hotel, situated in the resort of Breton Woods in New Hampshire for many years famous for its ghosts. It is said that the ghost of Caroline Stickney, the wife of the person who lives this hotel ever built still in the suite tower. The Spirit makes graffiti and goes at regular intervals, lighting. Before this could be observed only in summer, but now that the hotel is open all year round, including winter visitors are talking about meetings with"Princess". This is the first travel book that I've ever read from cover to cover. I usually thumb through them to find a restaurant or a hotel, but this is a very different animal. Half travel book, half monologue, this book makes you want to buy a backpack and follow in the footsteps of the author. While not quite Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, it is hard not to enjoy the story and look forward to the next chapters with anticipation.

The descriptions of beaches, seedy hotels, and characters on the road bring SE Asia to life. More importantly, reading it makes the reader comfortable -- and confident -- of one's ability to make a low-budget journey. The unstated fear of leaving the comfort of the 5-star hotel is really not knowing what is around the corner. Reading this book gives you a very good idea of what to expect.

If you are thinking of going to Asia, do yourself a favour. Buy this book, replan your itinerary, save a bundle and multiply your experience exponentially.

This is a great, easy to read account that just goes to show that you are never too old to enjoy backpacking. The good part is that it is written from personal experience not by a travel writer.

The book demonstrates that you anything is possile regardless of age. A good read for those thinking of backpacking around Asia.

Of course it is best avoided.Areas east of the peninsula (Koh Samui, Hat Yai) are best visited from December to June. However, visit the Gulf of Thailand region is possible throughout the year, but those who go, this region should check the current status of time to avoid the rain. There are lots better - maxiff - Va United States
I've owned many other Michelin guides especially for Europe and used them extensively. Thailand is just not one of their better books - a disappointment. Not very complete information or especially helful in planning an itinerary which Michelin is usually good for with its star system. There are much better and more thorough Thailand guides, Rough Guide or Lonely Planet for a start (tho we did find some mistakes in that that.)

Moon Handbooks: Thailand (3rd Ed.) Review

I used this Handbook last year having perused the Rough Guide and LP Guides extensively. This was the one I packed for the trip to the north, the northeast, BKK, and a couple of side trips to Ratchaburi and Ayudaya. Great guide. Subtly written and informative.

I, too, am troubled the lack of a new edition, and I don't see indications on the Moon website that another is coming soon. It's been nearly six years. I'll buy the new one...I'd even pay twice and throw in an order of gai yang!

Having travelled a lot in Thailand, and owning just about every guidebook, this one is clearly the best. In depth, accurate, intelligent, comprehensive, and amusingly written with a touch of sarcasm. Only problem is that it is somewhat out of date. I am anxiously awaiting a new edition. This is still a most valuable addition to one's references on travel to the Kingdom.

Thailand: A Climbing Guide (Climbing Guides) Review

There are no fewer than four climbing guides for Thailand of which I am aware. Sirichai Pongsopon's "Thailand Rock Climbing Guide Book" (2005), Wee Changrua/Elke Schmitz's "Rock Climbing in Thailand" (3rd ed, Dec 2005), the King Climber's guidebook (not certain the date on this one), and, of course, Sam Lightner, Jr.'s "Thailand: A Climbing Guide" (2005).

Of all these guidebooks, Sam's guide is by far the thickest, weighing in at nearly 340 pages. Wee's/Elke's and Sirichai's come in in the mid-200s (the King Climber guidebook I opted not to pick up because it was my understanding from a number of other climbers that it was essentially a direct copy of an earlier edition of Wee's/Elke's, errors and all - so I have no hard supporting data for comparisons as with the other three; besides, I only had only so many bahts with which to buy guidebooks!). Sirichai's black and rad-like photo cover guide cuts right to the point: after about 20 pages of "fluff", his book breaks right into topos and listings of routes. There are no route descriptions, however, anywhere. If you come to a tricky spot, you'll have to puzzle it out for yourself (and just go for the next bolt/sling). He does include some notes about rebolting of routes when and where known (at the time of his writing).

Wee's and Elke's black cover guide has a bit more up-front fluff for the traveling climber: about 40 pages worth. But from there the guide dives straight into topos and route listings, with a few routes having brief notes. The book is also sprinkled with a few more fluff pages and advertisements in the routes section.

Sam's book has a bright, spring/aqua-green cover, with a photo of a climber on a route in Dum's Kitchen. His guide spends the first five full chapters - 95 pages - on "fluff", before he begins covering the climbing in general. He goes into a lot of detail for the traveling climber, much of it invaluable for the first-time visitor to Thailand (but already some of it out of date, as is the bane of all guides - information goes out of date before the books hit the stands) (for example, there are easily twice as many bungalow operations in Tonsai than what Sam lists, perhaps even three times as many; good to know for when you arrive and find nothing available at the listed ones). Good reading material for the plane flight to Thailand. For someone who has been to Thailand a couple of times, much of the material is still helpful, esp if you have not had the opportunity to experience everything that Sam has. For those climbers who more or less live in Thailand during the Northern Hemisphere winter months, it is probably superfluous information. Unless you haven't been paying much attention to the culture or environment around you...

One bit of fluff that Sam's guide has which the other guides do not is a section of color photos. While these do not give more information of the climbing walls/routes, they nicely add to the atmosphere of the region, giving a taste of what you might get to see/experience while you are there.

Unlike Wee's/Elke's and Sirichai's, Sam uses primarily photos for his topos (the other guys use exclusively drawings). In some cases the photo topos are quite helpful. In other cases, especially when some of the pertinent details are lost to inconsequential details, or to flat lighting, the drawings of the other guides are a better help for finding routes. If all else fails, one can always ask someone nearby what they are on in order to help orient oneself to the cliffs one is about to climb.

Sam's guide gives more route information than either Wee's/Elke's or Sirichai's, more of what U.S. climbers might expect in a guidebook. Personally I like a route description rather than "just follow the bolts, for crying out loud!" Occasionally, however, he bails on route descriptions in favor of some background information on the route and you're left to either follow the topo, the bolts/slings, and/or the chalk marks to climb it.

As with any guide, not all of Sam's info is accurate or correct (for the 2006 season, increase all the prices - such as longtail rides or bungalow costs - by 10-20 percent). Some of these are just typos, but a few could prove serious. For example, if you arrive with just one 60-meter rope, you are unlikely to try jumping on "The Groove Tube" (or it's neighboring two climbs) without a second rope as Sam notes it is 35-meters tall. However, upon arriving at the base of the climb you'll likely note everyone easily lowers off (or top-ropes) these three routes with a single 60-meter rope. While not critical, had the typo been the other way around...

One of the most negative aspects of Sam's book is his disparaging and often upturned-nose position of most of the easier routes in the region. His guide discriminates against people who don't climb "hard" stuff. He leaves the reader with the impression that if you don't climb 6a or harder, there's really not much there for you to do (and he's not always kind to the 6a routes, either). One area in particular, Shadow Wall, Sam completely dumps on, and refuses to even mention what routes lie within. While Wee/Elke and Sirichai also mention it's not a very nice area, they at least give topos and list routes for the wall. Upon visiting, I found that yes, some routes there are not worth climbing, and yes, the area is most definitely not Dum's Kitchen or Thaiwand, but there are still routes that are perfectly fine to climb - especially for the climber who does NOT climb at the lofty 7a or harder! For the most part Sam treats routes easier than 6a as unworthy and you shouldn't bother (if he even mentions them at all). Sam seems to forget that many climbers, however, only climb at the level of 4s and 5s, and might squeak onto 6a's, but don't do harder routes. Prior to my trip to Thailand I had only Sam's book to go by, and had the VERY wrong impression my climbing time there would be short and brief (as I don't climb 6a/6b in general; however, grades are soft out there, and I was able to get on a number of 6a's and 6b's). Upon picking up Sirichai's and Wee's/Elke's guides, I quickly understood there are a number of moderate level routes the non-elite/non-hardcore climber can get on and still enjoy oneself. And so between those and the 6a's/6b's I climbed, I managed to squeeze in 7 full and enjoyable days of climbing, and still not touch everything I wanted to get on.

Sam does maintain a webpage for updates to the guide (http://www.thailandclimbingguide.com/). However, he does clarify that he will only consider feedback from other climbers on corrections/updates, and will "eventually" put up that he deems worthy. Something to keep in mind when checking for updates (or sending in feedback).

Overall, as a standalone book for the general climber, I would rate Sam's guide 3.5 on a scale of 1-5 (but Amazon doesn't do half-stars, so I rated it '4'). The saving grace is all the extra fluff. If you were to use it as a supplement to Sirichai's or Wee's/Elke's guide (or both), or you climb exclusively at 7a and harder, it's a 4.5.

Sam's guide for Thailand is very useful for the first time visitor with lots of information and stories on locations, getting around and local culture.

there are a few routes missing in this book by now and the layout can be a little frustrating at times, with photo maps that are not as accurate as I would like. It is generally well laid out and freindly to use.

Alot of my mates had the updated 2007 guide from wee's and this seemed more up to date, crag wise, but I found the information on Thailand, language tid bits and hints on how to get around etc, it was perfect for someone who hadn't visited Ton Sai before and didnt know what to expect.

I got this book and Wee Changrua/Elke Schmitz's "Rock Climbing in Thailand" (3rd ed, Dec 2005) guidebook. Sam's book is good in giving you background and route descriptions but it is hard sometimes to find climbs with his photos. Also some data is out of date. For example the Diamond Cave area, only 2-3 climbs go the full height of the wall to the roof but looking at Sam's book it looks like they all go to the roof. Wee's book is upto date on this. Also Wee has a new edition, availible in Railay and Tonsai with the newest info; such as Stalagasaurus losing it's defining stalactite.

Otherwise it's an ok book.

Lonely Planet Thailand's Islands & Beaches (Lonely Planet Travel Guides) Review

I got a lot of use out of the book and made 2 trips to Thailand on it. I went to Koh Chang, and the information was a great help in helping me plan when to go, what to do, how to get there and everything. It especially helped in Bangkok, which is needed as this is a place where you don't want to seem lost, it is overwhelming. One thing that I would add to this book, When you come out of the last gate at the airport, there will be very many people standing there, waiting for the tourists. Don't look at them!!!! As soon as you make eye contact, they will be on you like white on rice ready to find anything that you might need, just to get some kind of commission. I did a lot of research about a month or two both with this book as well as the internet (check out lonely planet's site, as well as other web queries), so it helps to not get there and open the book for the first time. If you want to go to Phuket or Koh Samui or some other tourist trap, you don't really need a book, but this book might tell you some insider's tips that you might not find just by showing up and waiting to be ripped off. One other thing, about flights, join a courier orgnaization. It will save you A LOT of money and you will only have to sacrifice some baggage space. Another thing, if you decide to go to the tropical spots, best time is the 1st of October. This is the beginning of tourist season, although it doesn't pick up for another month, so you can still do everything without the crowds present yet. One last thing: GO TO KOH CHANG!! It is the best!! This book is to me considered to be a necessary item for travel (Lonely Planet always is!).

Marketed For Whom? - K. Johnson - US/Asia
This edition has plenty of information that is helpful. One can get enough information before going, upon arrival, or after arriving on where to explore without this book, however. The Lonely Planet Thailand guidebook (for the entire country and not just the islands and beaches) also has plenty of information on Thailand's islands and beaches.

With the inclusion of "luxury" accommodation and over-priced "tourist" restaurants and trinket shops, it appears this book is marketed towards a particular group: North Americans who only have two-weeks, and therefore need to "plan" ahead for their trip. This is a particular market and that is understandable, but it appears that LP is trying to get a piece of this market, and gear this guide-book towards these type of folks.

One thing to note: Ko Chang is not off the beaten track by any means. It's going to be the next place completely destroyed by the Tourist Authority of Thailand. They are working on it right now, evicting local Thais who've lived there for generations to build hotels.

There is no where in S.E. Asia that is "off the beaten" track, except perhaps, parts of Laos. The trail is crowded, and continues to get bigger. If you're a long-term visitor or a "two-week hoteller" then this book will due.

Information covered in other travel guides - -
I just returned from a trip to Thailand. I was in Bangkok, Phuket and some of the outlying islands. There is nothing in this book that is not covered in the other general Thailand Guides. I would even go so far to say the Rough Guides Thailand has more comprehensive information about places to stay and things to do near the beaches. Also, something I didn't know, Thailand has a great tourism service provided in the Airport in Bangkok that can book most anything you need for stay on the beaches (if you are going to Phuket). It was a great trip even if I did have to lug this junky book around with me the whole time!

Poorly organized book with abundant misinformation - -
I purchased this book thinking that it would be the definitive text on the islands of Thailand. I could not have been more wrong. Lonely Planet's misinformation on the weather patterns (specifically monsoons typical locations at different times of the year) resulted in my being stranded on an island in a monsoon. Other guide books including the rough guide to thailand as well as my German and Irish colleagues books provided accurate information which frequently disagreed with the information in this book. I also found that the rough guide to Thailand provided more complete and accurate information on the islands. Overall I would not recommend this book to anyone- better luck next time to the authors.

Thailand (Country Guide) Review

Without a doubt, Kindle owners traveling to Thailand should buy Lonely Planet Thailand Kindle Edition. Despite notable drawbacks (e.g., maps are difficult to read), the search function, bookmarks, hyperlinks to other sections, and most of all portability make it indispensable whether you are temple spotting, questing for the perfect curry, or relaxing on the beach.

Remember how heavy your daypack always ends up by the time you get everything you may need during the day? The portability of the Kindle and Lonely Planet combination eliminates at least a few pounds compared with even the smallest country-wide guidebooks. This is a blessing you will count every evening on the trip.

The primary flaw with this book on the Kindle is the difficulty with depicting the maps on the screen. Due to limitations of screen size on the Kindle 2 (or 1), the well-known and useful Lonely Planet maps are broken into smaller sections, typically quadrants. Finding a restaurant, for example, requires navigating to the fourth page to view the legend, then to the page containing that portion of the map. Although frustrating at first, you will quickly become used to it; and, free maps abound in Thailand.

As anyone familiar with Lonely Planet guidebooks can tell you, this book has everything you need to know about Thailand. Worried about whether or not there is a departure tax to leave Thailand? Need a hostel in Koh Samui? How about a five star hotel? Wonder if you should begin a malaria regimen before your jungle trek? It is all in there.

Before buying, I noticed a number of complaints about this book containing a large amount of politics. Fortunately, it is a guidebook, and you need only read interests you. Thailand has something for everyone; so does this book.

I appreciated having this book with me, especially without the weight of the paperback, and enjoyed the frank opinions on sleeping, eating, and experiences in Thailand. Buy it and carry it along as you create your own paradise in Thailand.

Kindle Edition: A Major Headache - A. Battist - New York, NY
I was excited to have an e-version on my iPhone for travelling but I found myself wishing I had a hard copy once I was in Thailand. While all of the useful Lonely Planet info is in there - it is so hard to find in the Kindle Edition.

There is a linked table of contents but overall I found navigating very difficult.

The maps were especially painful. Maybe it was too much to expect an integrated google map but the way the maps are sliced and diced makes it especially hard to follow or find anything.

Conclusion: I'll stick to the hard copies for now.

Lonely Planet Guidebooks Are All the Same..the Maps Are Horrible - run50 - Boulder, CO
A friend and I have done annual cycling trips through Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and I have also done Malaysia and Indonesia/Bali. In most our/my trips, we've taken along the Lonely Planet guidebooks to use for accomodation recommendations, restaurants, etc. There are many negatives I have found using Lonely Planet guidebooks. First off, the maps they have in their guidebooks are just plain awful. We can always tell whenever we come into a city wherever we're riding that we're going to have a problem finding the recommended accomodations, because you'll see hoards of backpackers standing on curbs with a Lonely Planet guidebook in their hands trying to make sense of some silly little map they have in the book. They are so bad that we have changed the name of Lonely Planet guidebooks to Lost Planet guidebooks because they will definitely get you lost.

I would think the guidebooks are ok if you're coming into a city by bus or train, but God forbid if you're on a bicycle, motorbike or car. Why they cannot show the main highways entering the cities so you can get your orientation, I don't know. The thing that always gets us, is that they will list street names in the maps, and yet 75% of the cities when you get there, don't have street signs!!

I wrote a letter to Lonely Planet last year after our cycling trip with a recommendation that they should provide in the guidebook reference for accomodations, hotels, etc., the GPS coordinates. This would facilitate very easy and quick access to find these places. Most travelers these days (even the backpackers) carry some sort of GPS, whether it be on a iPhone, other smartphone, Garmin device, etc. The guidebook companies are missing out on a unique opportunity to really provide travelers with something useful...like GPS coordinates. And you don't necessarily need the detailed maps of a city for your GPS to get to these places if you have the coordinates. But, in typical Lonely Planet fashion, I got no response of course.

Accomodations...where do they find these places? Many of their recommended places are so dilapidated, bug infested with cockroaches and mosquitoes, dirty linen that sometimes looks like it hasn't been washed in weeks. And yet, the place will display a sign, that we are recommended by Lonely Planet.

We stopped paying full price for the Lonely Planet guidebooks a long time ago. What we do, is on a stop in Vietnam or Cambodia, we will buy the knockoff/pirated versions for and use. Yeh some of the pages may be faint to read but then the maps are worthless anyway. Paying for a Lonely Planet guidebook in my opinion is a big waste of $$$. You can get much better information buy just going onto the internet when you get to a city and finding cheap clean accomodations and whatever else you need. Save yourself the $$$ on these guidebooks....they aren't really that helpful and you can do it all on your own.

Although I only used about a quarter of this book's total content on my last journey, there were certain instances where more information would have been certainly preferred; and had me and my partner not been as savvy as we were, whole days could've been compromised. This is an excellent guide for choosing a dive destination. My wife and I have had the good fortune to travel to a number of excellent dive locations in the past several years and this guide gets it right. Be forewarned, it makes no effort to be a comprehensive guide to the entire world (for that, try Dive by Monty Halls). But it does cover the most intriguing dive locations, so it is heavy on Asia and the South Pacific and light on the Caribbean and has no coverage of temperate destinations, such as California or British Columbia.

It is more than a dive guide. It does cover the primary dive sites for each location, but the real value of this book is it's recommendations on accommodations and other activities. It is perfect for choosing a vacation destination and to get your planning started.

The Rough Guide to Thailand 6 (Rough Guide Travel Guides) Review

I just returned from Thailand and I took four guides: Thomas Cook's, Lonely Planet, Let's Go, and this guide (see my reviews on the others guides, and do seriously consider Lonely Planet Islands & Beaches IF you are only going to spend time as a sun lizard).

`Thomas Cook Thailand' is a special niche guide, best suited for those with tour groups and `Let's Go Thailand' is the guide for those backpackers that are `on the cheap'. This leaves Rough Guide to face off with Lonely Planet and in some areas it is superior to L.P and in one big area it is not.

Rough Guide's restaurant recommendations are by far the best of any guide I reviewed; they are both reliable and informative, giving great descriptions and dish recommendations, "the grilled river prawns with chili, the matsaman curry and the delicious durian cheese-cake." The restaurant prices are listed as: Expensive, Moderate and Inexpensive.

The hotel accommodations recommendations are also descriptive, very reliable and most have either webpage addresses or email. Sadly, Rough Guide still uses the user 'unfriendly' price codes, instead of just saying in dollars (or Bahts) what the cost for the hotel is. Thus you need to memorize the table where the number 4=400-600B and 5=600-900B etc., then you can convert to either dollars or euros to get the price. Also, since the Guide is published in 2004 (thus the information is from 2003) you add 10-20% for inflation. Both Lonely Planet and Let's Go just tell you what the price is. "Duh".

The Guide has excellent information that tells you the nitty-gritty that prepairs you for your trip. It also has great history, religion (Buddhism of course), environmental and cultural sections. Not to be missed is the additional reading recommendations (six pages).

Where it bombs is BANGKOK. The Guide says that Bangkok is "sprawling, chaotic and exhausting" and that is exactly how I experienced the 115 pages that covered this mega-city. The layout is dysfunctional. It has no logical consistency between any two points. Bangkok is the home of 11 million people; it is huge and spreads out like greater Los Angeles. It needs to be broken down into regions and then sections and those need to be logically kept together. But, this guide will give you information on one area, like Thanon Sukhumvit, then 60 pages later the accommodations for that area, then 20 pages back will be the Thanon Sukhumvit map; but wait, the restaurants for that area... you guessed it, will be located some where else. Hello! Who laid this out? What herb, pray tell, were they using? So, if you plan to spend any significant time in Bangkok, then Lonely Planet is a better guide.

Maybe the 6th edition Rough Guide will improve the Bangkok section and hopefully increased the guides paltry index (8 pages for all of Thailand - Bangkok alone could be 8 pages) and make this an outstanding guide. Bangkok aside this is still a strongly recommended guide.

Do your research on line before going to any of the hotels suggested in this guide. Some of them are real dumps. Also, the guide does little to show you how to get around the country. I'm spoiled by Rick Steves guides that basically take you step by step on how to get out of the airport and to the sights, restaurants, hotels, etc. There are no prices and maps of Bangkok do not even show where the airport is at. It doesn't do what a guide is supposed to do, guide you. It gives a general overview of each city and gives a history lesson, but not much else. I have to wonder if the people who wrote the book actually went to Thailand or just read about it. Waste of money if you ask me. Something to read while on the toilet, otherwise I'm doing all me research on line.

Solid travel guide - C. Georgi -
Full of great and relevant information. Some prices have already gone up, despite how recently the book came out, but that's par for the course in Asia. It would have been nice if there were place names spelled out in Thai a bit more, so you could point them out to taxi drivers. They rarely spoke English and my pronunciation of the romanized Thai words wasn't up to snuff. It's also not as handy as a reference guide for looking up phone numbers or addresses to hotels, restaurants, etc. as say the Lonely Planet. It does provide a bit better context though and reads more comfortably. All in all, a good book. I bought it because it was so recent, but think I may go back to Lonely Planet for most future travel guides.

Very inaccurate! Wrecked my Vacation! - -
I bought this book and relied on it to plan my
vacation for 30 days in Thailand with my family.
This book is very, very inaccurate! The
information is so inaccurate that I think the
authors just made up things to fill up pages.
It was worthless when I was visiting cities in
Thailand because each time I found the
information incorrect and misleading. I cursed
this book many times when I was on vacation in
Thailand for being so useless and deceptive and
inaccurate. I really hate to give a book such
a terrible review and I usually would never
comment but because this book let me down so
much in Thailand I decided to tell other readers
to warn them to look elsewhere for "reliable"
information. Have a good trip to Thailand is my
wish to you but buy some other book than this one.
It is DANGEROUS to print untruths and misinformation
and wrong address and wrong prices and wrong
everything else. This book was dead wrong so many
times it made me vomit. The authors now have no
credibility with me and I will never buy another
Rough Guide to anywhere because of it. It's
expecially dangerous when you are traveling with a
young child as I was and relied on the book and it
let me down again and again putting my family in
a bad way really fast. It's not fun when this happens
especially in a foreign country with your kid.

I have lots of guidebooks - and lots of Lonely Planets, for that matter. But despite the fact that they say they are for "independent travellers", I keep finding ridiculous reviews on restaurants and hotels, to the point where I've stopped using them.

The History, Snapshot, and similar sections are great, but if you have a brain of your own - use it. Forget their restaurant and hotel recommendations, as I'm not even sure they visit the places. Sometimes they have history or comments on places that is worthwhile to read, though. All tourbooks may have these drawbacks, to be fair.

Finally, I think I'm going to stop buying Lonely Planet's, though. First, they always act like driving is so scary everywhere, when it's actually quite easy to anyone with a brain. They also forget to give worthwhile tips on getting a car, etc. I imagine that this is their way of "saving the Earth". To a person who does care about the Earth, but doesn't believe that being a dirty hippie is going to save anything, this - and all their other BS trying to coerce their opinions onto you as fact - gets really freakin' old. Yes, yes, I know, LP is founded by some hippie freak from AUS or something - whooptie doo. That doesn't mean I have to pay some jerk who's going to push his politics on me, whether I agree with them or not.

I've used a lot of lonely planet guides in my travels, but I found this one a bit less useful than other LP country guides. It just seemed like the detail was missing, especially in regards to beaches and water activities. It almost seems like you need to buy this guide for 'most of Thailand' and then the seperate guide for beaches which is just asking too much. Could have more detail on major attractions like the Grand palace (how about a map?) and more detail on things like snorkelling / diving / surf spots on maps like they do for the Hawaii guide
