After a summer serve in war zones east Africa, where I slept in a tent for two of the three months that I was there, I returned to the United States on a law education to begin. Far less adventurous and difficult for me, passion, I fight my first year of law school with. Although I am the first semester courses from the skin of my teeth, my GPA was pretty disheartening that someone thinks a career as a lawyer.
Luckily, it took abe several months for the second semester final exams to be graded and posted. I have therefore in good faith, pursues an international law firm and summer internship program at the University of Hong Kong. Located Atop beautiful Victorian Peak, I dived deeper into the science and international law.
What was this about three months in Hong Kong is unique in the summer of 1995 that presented the British government. Saw on a trip to the Supreme Court, I am Chinese judges wearing white BritishStyle wigs. It was a funny look and rare site.
My passion in particular helped the oppressed people in forgotten countries where their human rights have been violated. Unfortunately, I have from my law professor in Hong Kong, that international treaties on human rights rarely by the United Nations or other persons are established worldwide. For me this is further reduced the importance of international law, and my interest in studying it.
In those days, a certain religiousGroup smuggled Bibles to Hong Kong in Shenzhen, China. I was asked to participate, what I did. On this day of smuggling Bibles was buried much more exciting than in my entire summer legal books in Hong Kong.
Opened after his return home after successfully completing my summer internship and academic program, I am a discouraging letter from my law school encouraged me on my sad grade point average based withdraw.
You wonder what on earth would I do with my life now, whenwalking home to my apartment in Brooklyn Heights, I heard a voice. "Go east young man!" Go east! "
Gripped by what I heard, I decided to go to Chinatown this week. After this, I immediately offered a Chinese pastor who get a job, met with him throughout Asia, and his English teacher. Without hesitation, I gladly accepted. Not long after, I found myself in Taipei, Taiwan.
Was on the road from my new apartment Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Park in honor ofChinese revolutionary leader, Taiwan government established. Suffering from jet lag during the first week I was in Taiwan, I went out looking for something to eat, when I discovered the beautiful park across the street.
Many people were exercising, enjoying the fresh breeze. Tai Chi was a particular favorite, which I saw, both men, when with the utmost concentration and precision. The Chinese internal martial art often practiced for health and longevity. The slow andflowing movements facilitate inner harmony and unity in.
Before the business began to date was the increase of the national flag, together with a military salute every day. It was a pleasure to be able to see and watch. Although I could not speak Mandarin, which I seduce you with my eyes, my heart and deposited saw a deep respect for Chinese culture.
Because of my cooperation with Pastor Ko and other reputable ways, I soon became a highly sought out speaker. Otherin Asia, began hearing from me and invited me to their countries.
My trip to Burma was superior to a more covert operation where I was invited, was a "blackout area", where foreigners were not allowed to speak too. But after a meeting with my first contact in Rangoon, we were able to secure on the issue of national currency exchange and a domestic flight to the remote destination.
There was no electricity. I slept on a blow up mattress under a mosquito net, whilehuge rats crawling overhead in the night. We get our low hanging fruit and supplies from a string, the rats to keep them in the course of the evening.
When I woke up in the morning, there were always fresh rodent droppings on my mosquito net. However, I was glad such an easy suffering, given the huge response of people when I talked with them about their personal capacity to bear, and a world-changer.
Since the universities were shut down in BurmaStudents did what they could to further their education and professional development. That is why they were so excited to hear, speak to me.
Historically, students and monks' peaceful protests in Burma have been ended by brutality and murder. What worries me most, however, was the lack of opportunity for bright young people across the country. Religious leaders from the monasteries for Rice asked daily in the streets of Rangoon. Democracy would be not like those in power were to be tolerateddetermined to keep as long as possible.
What touched my heart this was the humility and the hunger of the young adults in the vicinity of foreigners to learn what they could draw on. Such a desire for knowledge and self-development deeply touched my heart, commit to, I can only do for the Burmese youth. I adore the freedom in the hearts of youth and monks in Burma can somehow triumphant breakthrough and transformation of their beloved homeland.
Upon reaching my twenty-eight days period tomy visa in Burma, I was forced to leave the country. My next stop was Thailand, a beautiful country with lots of sexual perversion.
Never in my life I had seen how open prostitution when I was in Bangkok and Phuket. Prostitutes and transvestites free approached people on the streets soliciting payment for sexual favors. Often women and "lady-boys" to speak to me obscenities and sale of services.
The U.S. Navy and Marines arrived in Phuket like to party and take in someextracurricular activities. A few men became friendly service with local girls. I can only imagine how many foreigners to wake up drunk in the morning only to find they've slept with a transvestite.
About the vices of prostitution, Thailand is generally a nice place for vacation and to visit. The food is fantastic. The people are friendly. The beaches are excellent. Among the islands, which I attended, Krabi and Pi-Pi, these were the hardest hit by the tsunami.
A EuropeanRestaurant owner told me stories of the Burmese young ladies who have been kidnapped or promised work in upscale resorts. As soon as the Burmese girls were brought into the cities, their passports were taken and they have been violently forced into prostitution. I was informed that once the young ladies some sexual disease or HIV get these decisions will be taken back to the Burmese border, leaving a lethal injection and death.
These violations are rarely fought, given the limited economicOpportunities in Burma. It is even along the northeastern region of Thailand, said families sell their daughters into prostitution to earn money.
Although I saw many beautiful young girls, happy I could control myself. I was not catching any sexual diseases, I was told, was far more interested in spreading throughout Thailand.
I traveled further south, when I received an invitation in Penang, Malaysia to speak. Immediately after arrival in Malaysia, I felt it was amore government hand over the land. I found the Muslims in Malaysia very friendly and respectful.
My biggest adventure was traveling in East Malaysia, where I spoke in several poor villages. The precious people were very superstitious, practicing different observances such as voodoo, I had only seen before in Haiti. Some claimed they were harassed and tormented by demonic spirits. So I talked about the importance of guarding your heart, personal purity and livingfearless.
The villagers were overjoyed, cooked me to visit one and countless meals for me to try. Their poverty does not hinder their generous hospitality, neither their generosity. I will never forget the tenderness of the heart of Malaysians has shown me.
An unexpected visitor showed up that was in a modest house, where I was a monkey. During the outbreak of Japanese encephalitis, as was the military, all pigs were slaughtered, many worried aboutother animals have contracted the virus. Thankfully we have never been sick with the disease and led unscathed by the outbreak.
While in East Malaysia (the island Bornea), came an invitation to speak in Brunei. This small, oil rich nation had not much to do socially at night, but the people were all very polite and hardworking. Shell Oil and other petroleum contractors visited the small country do business.
What I was most surprised to see over seventyDo people in a small house to talk to me jam packed. The event was hosted by a Christian community days, which is not legally permissible in public.
When I inquired further than the laws of Brunei, I was told that only the Catholics and Anglicans are legally authorized to carry out Christian ceremonies. Brunei does not allow other religious groups, churches or schools.
It was then I realized how precious is the freedom of thought and freedom of expression, without which there canthere will be no democracy or simply just government, the people. Such sacred freedoms we in the West so often take for granted are well looked after and only wanted for abroad in such countries such as Brunei.
While Brunei has a thriving economy, it is a "dry land" means that no alcohol is sold in the country. Certainly the ban on the use of alcohol has its advantages. There are no incidents for people with drunken driving to endanger, not excessive drug abuse. As someone who does not drink me,Such restrictions did not affect me.
However, limited as a world traveler and travel through Asia, the laws of Brunei, religion and consumption clearly evident. On a more fun note, was the free theme park, the Sultan happy for everyone in the middle of the country constructed using a blast! Children and adults of all ages to make merry and enjoy it very much! It is my hope the Sultan's generosity extends over into the social freedoms for the people of Brunei.
After leavingBrunei's went to Jakarta, Indonesia. As a surfer Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, it soon became my favorite country in Asia. Considering that I do not make much money for the trip on the cheap hotels and minimal cost to Indonesia to live very comfortable for me.
Even better, the people were very generous. I always said when I left with more money than I came with me. On going to get a haircut in the salon, I was surprised to discover reflexology at present.Foot massage is very popular throughout Indonesia and costs only about $ 5 to $ 10 depending on where you go.
After a good workout in the hotel gym I even managed to get a full body massage duration of one hour for only $ 10 to $ 15 USD. Suddenly, I felt like a king, but I lived on the budget a mass grave.
During a trip to different areas of Jakarta, my taxi driver showed me at an earlier hotel, the bombed during the riots a few years ago. The building was completelydestroyed. I was told that Islamic terrorists in anticipation of President Clinton and other Americans, have flown into the air there.
I heard about the May riots in the Chinese business people were also of Muslim extremists who destroyed their homes and tried to kill them aligned. Like clockwork every year in May, had the Chinese left the country to fear for their lives.
It seems that the Chinese living in Indonesia, the locals jealous. Her business acumen and astute mindsprovoked fighting Indonesians.
However, there are equal opportunities for all throughout Indonesia. But many people were easily aroused by the assertion call for violence. Unfortunately, many died over the years as a result.
I fell madly in Indonesia and returned several times. I particularly remember my time to speak in East Timor during the war in 2000 before the United Nations granted them the national sovereignty. There was a time of hardship and turmoil, as the warmany innocent people killed. Fortunately, Timor-Leste, as it is now called, is a country house in peace.
When the tsunami swept over the island of Sumatra, I was with compassion on his way to Banda Aceh. The long-standing rebel province of Indonesia has historically killed dissidents and religious leaders of other religions. Finally, the leaders of the Banda Aceh to ban international aid organizations as a whole.
All this changed when in Banda Aceh and the neighboring towns weredevastated by the tsunami. International relief agencies from around the world were suddenly greeted with open arms, waving hands and smiling faces.
I met people who had lost up to five children and their wives in a single day. A Muslim man told me he cried for two months.
In an effort to do what I am with what I have little finances, we were able to help a Muslim young man rebuild his home. His house was flattened by the tsunami and he washed on the top of a mountain near whereThe waves swept through.
It was nothing less than a miracle that receive this alive. Then she pulled all together, to build their houses again, bureaucratic delays hindered progress by the government. However, there are many continued to build with or without permission.
Other allegations later surfaced that corrupt government officials were national and local level pickpocketing donations and not getting them to the most needy. This corruption is widespreadIndonesia is clearly due to the poor and faulty infrastructure throughout the country.
Bribery is unfortunately the norm. Even more disturbing was the drug epidemic, I witnessed among the youth, many of whom use ecstasy. It is said that some 15,000 young people each year die of ecstasy overdose.
The island of Java also has its problems with prostitution. Nothing that you expect from an Islamic state.
The Bali bombings, in which clubs were set on fire and sent frightened tourists killedthroughout the tourism industry. Since the economy is plummeting, the Indonesian government and the police found quickly responded to terrorist elements seeking to thwart the national stability.
The dangers that remain of terrorists in remote areas of Indonesia, because you never know when a radical strike. Overall, Indonesia is very peaceful, polite and friendly towards foreigners.
I often felt like a movie star everywhere I went to Indonesia as people were calling me with joy, hope, get a wave or smile back.
The sweetness and sincerity of the people stole my heart. Although I am an American citizen was born, I left my heart in Asia. Every chance I get, I gladly and wholeheartedly return to the continent, where two thirds of the world's population lives.
Here at home in America, I survive, but thrive in the Far East, I! Asia is where my heart comes alive!
